BioViva CSO Anca Selariu speaks at TED on the importance of daring innovation

Humans dream big, break rules they make, set unreasonable goals and achieve the impossible when they fiercely fight obstacles and distractions. The human capacity for abstract reasoning and communication allowed the species to learn, imagine and plan far into the future, and become evolution's most surprising success story.

I am an integrative biomedical sciences doctor and aspiring cultural universalist. I believe in in the limitlessness of human potential. I imagine humanity as one, beautiful, inter-galactic nation within the next 1000 years, and view each human brain existing today as a precious resource to realize this potential. I hope to:

1. Educate the world on mental flexibility, blend knowledge into a universal language to enhance people’s natural curiosity and ability to think big.

Why?  To overcome imagined limits so that prejudice, fear and discrimination become obsolete

2. Create human enhancements using ALL interdisciplinary knowledge and tools available.

Why?  to allow humanity to keep up and co-evolve with its own brain products.

3. Help design an ergonomic habitat for the far-future humanity, both on and above Terra.

Why?   because our collective mind will always seek to conquer the impossible, and we owe the future humans the best of what we can do today.

Liz Parrish: a Person with a Purpose

Canadian Sylvain Rochon presents Liz Parrish and her mission in the latest episode of People With Purpose, "an experimental and inspirational concept show designed to encourage professionals and young individuals to start or participate in projects that improve the lives of others in their community and at large."

Liz speaks about the importance of making a better world, meaning the necessity to increase healthy life span, care about our environment, and create a world in which we get along and help each other move forward. Unhealthy people are selfcentered and inward looking, while healthy people turn outward to help others. Hence perfect health is about more than individuals living longer.  It is about a better, more peaceful and kinder world.

"We see a better world coming". Liz Parrish on Becoming Immortal in the latest VPRO Backlight documentary

Dutch independent documentarists VPRO's latest documentary about Silicon Valley and its quest for immortality, featuring  Liz Parrish, with Linda Chamberlain for Alcor, Aubrey de Grey for SENS,  a DIY life extensionist and two science fiction writers.  They speak about the scientific endeavor, funded by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, to cure aging.  Far from being a narcissistic enterprise by Me, Myself and I to add days to my given lifespan, the goal of gene therapy is ultimately to modulate our genetic profiles to make people who will work together to the bigger goals: happiness and harmony.    "For me it’s all or nothing: either we start solving the problems of the future and the now, or we are not participating in making a better world.  So I would rather be dead than die of the diseases of aging," says Liz Parrish and explains why she became the first human to receive gene therapy to cure aging.  "We couldn’t use the therapies in other people if we didn’t really know what would happen.  I wouldn’t put a drug in anybody that I wouldn’t take myself."

Against her critics Liz stresses that, "We see a better world coming and we have to be very careful that we don’t get stuck in the myths of what is ethical... As a society we have already decided to cure cancer, to cure Alzheimers, so treating biological aging is essentially curing those diseases."

Liz interviewed by Michael Garfield ahead of the upcoming BDYHAX conference

In this short interview Liz sums up BioViva’s mission: to transfer gene therapy from the lab to the clinic, and make it affordable for all, starting with small scale production of drugs for the early adopters.  In the next five years BioViva’s goal is to manufacture drugs on a larger scale to bring down prices, as well as to expand its range of therapies on offer to cover all or most of the aspects of the age-damaged cell.  See the full interview on the BDYHAX Youtube page and stay tuned for more of Liz at the conference in February 2018 in Austin TX.

Liz Parrish at L'ÉCHAPPÉE VOLÉE 2017

Our world is aging. According to the U.S. Census Bureau by 2020 there will be more people over the age of 65 than under the age of 5. Due to this, the diseases of aging are the number one cause of suffering in the world today. These impact not just our quality of life, but our economies too. It doesn’t have to be this way. With emerging gene and cell technologies we have a unique opportunity to alleviate suffering and revolutionize healthcare for everyone.

L'ÉCHAPPÉE VOLÉE is an accelerator of innovative projects initiated by the TEDxParis community in 2014. At the intersection of a think-tank, conference and workshop, L'ÉCHAPPÉE VOLÉE proposes and showcases projects that emphasize innovation in the service of the common good.

Think Nation: “We’re working on a cure for the grandest disease on the planet: biological ageing”

The English philosopher Thomas Hobbes correctly identified the historical state of humans when he said "Life in the state of nature is nasty, brutish and short", but it doesn't have to be that way.  At Think Nation in the UK Liz talks about the common cause of all major chronic diseases -- biological aging. The importance of extending healthspan is greater than ever, but it could also bring unparalleled benefits to wider human society. Liz Parrish at Wired Health 2017: Ageing is a Disease. Gene Therapy Could be the Cure

Our CEO, Liz Parrish, spoke at the Wired Health conference in London last month. At the conference Liz spoke about how her son being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes was the motivation behind her researching gene therapy treatments for cures. She also spoke about how and why she tested gene therapies on herself. Finally, Liz discussed the  importance of making gene therapy more widely available and how it could ‘cure’ the most prevalent disease of all; aging.

Liz Parrish - The Future of the Human Body - MIT Enterprise Forum

Fascinated by the possibility of living longer? Perhaps immeasurably longer. And without the diseases and diminished capacities that typically accompany aging.

If you're thinking of science fiction and not science, you probably haven't been paying attention. According to Google Venture's Bill Maris, the life sciences provide tools to achieve whatever we have the audacity to envision. I just hope to live long enough not to die. Google and Apple have joined forces to create an R&D company aimed at combatting aging. Others predict digital immortality (singularity) within a few decades, with human brains uploaded to computers. The list goes on.

In this video Liz Parrish, CEO or BioViva, discusses the fascinating possibilities and potential of gene therapy to make our bodies and our lives super-human.

This talk was recorded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Enterprise Forum. MIT Enterprise Forum is the global voice of entrepreneurship, affiliated with MIT NS headquartered with MIT Technology Review in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

BioViva CEO Liz Parrish on Singularity 1on1: Gene Therapy is NOT a Monstrous Science

BioViva‘s CEO Liz Parrish is a fire-starter and probably not everyone’s favorite person. But if your goal is as bold as defeating aging then you’ll have to break some eggs. And so feel as you might but I have to admit that Parrish is definitely one of my favorite people – not only for the scientific work that she does but also because she is a fun, passionate and fully committed individual that inspires me. Thus it was no surprise that, despite some technical difficulties with my set up, I had a total blast interviewing Liz for my Singularity 1on1 podcast.

During our 80 min conversation with Liz Parrish we cover a variety of interesting topics such as: her personal goals and motivations; how she started with the intent to cure childhood disease and ended up in the campaign to defeat aging; BioViva and its mission; being a fire-starter, vegetarian, not everyone’s favorite person and sticking to your choices; the campaign to cure Alzheimer’s Disease; what is gene therapy, how it works and why it is so promising; the definition of aging; the ethics in genetics; medicine and human rights; why telomerase therapy in humans is the most exciting therapy…

My favorite quote from this interview with Elizabeth Parrish is this:

“There is no time like the present. We can’t wait another 20 years… Starting now is the time to start.”

Liz Parrish - Bioviva - Ending Ageing through Gene Therapy

Liz Parrish on Gene Therapy and how to counter the effects of ageing. She discusses using being the first patient of Bioviva - what was involved in the gene therapy and how she is feeling now - what kinds of test feedback Bioviva will be looking for to help determine the efficacy of the gene therapy treatment. Gaps between research findings and therapies being taken to market is often down to cumbersome regulation. Further she discusses how telemorase maintains healthy telomere length and how telomeres help protect from cell damage, and some of the downstream effects of shortening telomeres. Muscle mass is required to avoid diseases and accidents related to muscular dystrophy - part of her gene therapy is related to rejuvenating healthy muscle tissue. In around four more months, the effects of the gene therapy on Liz's muscle mass will be tested further.

Media responses to human testing in gene therapy are discussed.
